Release

   "Release"

Todays image is one that we are all seeking out in recovery. The moment when we can feel free, the release from our difficulties and dependencies. Maybe for some this comes as a eureka moment, but this has not been my experience. Freedom from the cage is something I have had to seek out, and is a process often a long one. It is often just taking the next step, then after that the next one, and so on. The key for me has been wanting to seek the change, hunting after freedom. It is certainly not a passive process or something others can do for us or to us. We have to take ownership for our own recovery, which initially can be a real battle within us. It might just be asking for help, or seeking out a group or talking to a friend. What might seem like a small step to someone else can be a big leap for us especially as we learn to trust others.  My experience is that over time the process does become more natural as I have practiced taking those small steps one at a time.

"When we are trapped within our difficulties, it feels like a cage around us. It traps us, yet also somehow the confines bring us safety and security, a way to cope when what is outside feels risky and uncertain. Yet the truth is the very opposite. As we realise we can stretch our wings, we can take flight outside. We leave the cage behind us realising the door was open all along." Rachel

  • Thanks Rachel, It reminds me of how young birds practice flapping their wings before they are ready to leave the nest. I wonder what we need to practice so we can be ready to leave our cage?
